The St. Joseph Bay and surrounding area are famous for their outstanding fishing. Surf-casting and deep-sea fishing are popular on the Gulf of Mexico. Many local guides are available to take groups and individuals to the best spots. Scallop season is a highlight of the year when friends and families wade out into the shallow parts of the Bay and pick them up from off of the bottom. Port St. Joe has a good marina and marine store. Boats of various kinds, as well as other types of watercraft, etc., are readily available for rent on the peninsula or at other locations around the Bay.
Casual dining options near Le Grand Merci including Conehead’s Restaurant; The Trading Post; Shoobie’s; Peachy’s; and The Low Country Boil are easily accessible via the paved bike path bordering our property, as is the St. Joseph Shrimp Company where you can pick up fresh, locally caught seafood for cooking on our outdoor gas grill or have their friendly employees to cook your selection for you while you wait. Several good restaurants are a picturesque car drive along the bay in the very friendly town of Port St. Joe, nicknamed “Mayberry by the Sea.” We especially like the Sand Dollar Cafe and Paul Gant’s carry-out BBQ stand, but there are several other good options for you to choose from.
Port St. Joe also has lots of small shops where you can while away your time on a rainy day as well as a full-service grocery store, marine supply house, hardware store, and marina with drydock and repair facilities. It also hosts the Constitution Convention Museum where you can learn about this important part of the State of Florida's history.
Apalachicola offers additional dining and recreational possibilities including the unique Apalachicola Maritime Museum and Wooden Boat Building School where you can learn timeless tradecraft or book a cruise on the S/V Heritage (their 58 foot wooden sailing ketch).
Cape San Blas is one of the few places left in Florida where certain beaches allow horseback riding and are dog-friendly.
